Australia Building Permits Unexpectedly Fall in October
The number of dwellings approved in Australia unexpectedly declined by 8.1 percent month-over-month in October 2019, after a downwardly revised 7.3 percent gain in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.4 percent rise. Approvals dropped in both private sector dwellings excluding houses (-11.3 percent vs 13.3 percent in September) and private sector houses (-7 percent vs 3.9 percent in August).

Australia Building Permits Rebounds More than Estimated
The number of dwellings approved in Australia increased by 7.6 percent month-over-month in September 2019, reversing from a downwardly revised 0.6 percent fall in the previous month and easily beating market expectations of a 0.5 percent gain. This marked the first monthly rise in building permits since May, as approval rebounded for private sector houses (2.8 percent vs -2 percent in August). In addition, permits for private sector dwellings excluding houses surged (16.6 percent vs 3.5 percent).

The number of dwellings approved in Australia fell by 1.1 percent month-over-month in August 2019, after a 9.7 percent plunge in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 2.5 percent rise. It was the third straight month of decline in building permits, led by a decrease in private sector houses approved (-2.4 percent vs -3.1 percent in July). Meanwhile, approvals for private sector dwellings excluding houses rebounded (3.1 percent vs -18.5 percent).

Australia Building Permits Unexpectedly Tumble in July
The number of dwellings approvals in Australia slumped 9.7 percent month-over-month in July 2019, after a downwardly revised 0.8 percent fall in the previous month and below market expectations of a flat reading. It was the biggest monthly decline in building permits in four months, as approvals for private sector dwellings excluding houses dropped further (-18.4 percent vs -4.6 percent in June) and those for houses fell (-3.3 percent vs 0.2 percent). Among the states and territories, total dwelling approvals decreased in both Victoria (24.3 percent) and New South Wales (17.5 percent), but advanced in South Australia (34.8 percent), Tasmania (21.5 percent), Queensland (10.9 percent) and Western Australia (5.8 percent).

The number of dwellings approvals in Australia dropped by 1.2 percent month-over-month in June 2019, after a downwardly revised 0.3 percent rise in the previous month and compared with market expectations of a 1 percent fall. Permits for private sector dwellings excluding houses went down further (-6.5 percent vs -0.2 percent in May) while approvals for private sector houses picked up (0.4 percent vs a flat reading). Among the states and territories, total dwelling approvals decreased in Tasmania (-11.9 percent), Western Australia (-8.6 percent), New South Wales (-5.4 percent) and Queensland (-1.0 percent), while in Victoria rose (9.7 percent) and in South Australia was flat.

The number of dwellings approvals in Australia rose by 0.7 percent month-over-month in May 2019, easily beating market expectations of a flat reading and rebounding from a downwardly revised 3.4 percent fall in the previous month. The upturn was driven by permits for private sector dwellings excluding houses (1.2 percent vs -5.1 percent in April). In addition, the approvals for private sector houses fell less (-0.3 percent vs -1.5 percent). Among the states and territories, total dwelling approvals increased in Victoria (14.4 percent), while was flat in New South Wales, and there were declines in Queensland (-6.3 percent), Western Australia (-4.7 percent), South Australia (-2.9 percent), and Tasmania (-1.2 percent).
